In between my coaching calls I decided to…color…?  And it actually saved me time, because I let my mind rest.

I know that may not make a lot of sense, so keep reading because I have some tips for you on how to get rest how it can help you like it did me.

My business coach for Christmas got me a coloring book…for adults, let’s be clear.  I started coloring so that I could follow Jesus’ role modeling of resting, which I read in one of the books I have on being like Him.

Resting is so important because we pour into others either as leaders or into our customers.  If we are continually pouring out, what happens when our cup becomes empty?

This happened recently during a team meeting because I was tired.  I let a comment slip out that was poorly worded and likely led to some overwhelming feelings from my team.

We are in a knowledge business where we are paid to talk, listen, and think.  If we are not resting, all these things that we do to get paid are impaired.

Even if we put in three times the effort, we can still get only half of the results if we are tired, which will impact our ability to lead.

Here are some of my thoughts that can help you get more rest:

  1. Set Boundaries for your family and team
Context switching (jumping from task to task) is dangerous.  Everytime you are interrupted on a task, you end up losing 20 minutes of brain power productivity.  You may not feel that, you may be only interrupted for just a minute, but the actual brain power of getting back into your workflow after the interruption can cause you to lose 20 minutes.

Let your family know, “Here are the times I am going to be working, and you can expect me to be done at this time,” and you jam during that time.

If it’s your team interrupting you, you can say, “Hey, I’m right in the middle of something.  Can I get back to you in 20 minutes when I’m done?”

This will help you allow your day to end when it is supposed to end.

  2. Explain access
In the case of my clients, I have one-on-one clients communicate with me via text, and I have my group coaching clients communicate with me through Facebook Messenger.  This could be helpful for you to switch your communication from one type of individual to another platform.

I also let my clients know about my context switching and that I don’t want to do that.  I let them know they can text/message me anytime, and if I don’t get back to them right away, I will get back to them as soon as I get a break.  This relieves me of the panic when I receive a text that I have to respond right away, because I have set the agreement that I will get back to them at my earliest availability.

  3. Teach your mind to rest through basic meditation
I highly recommend the app Headspace to train your mind to rest.  Meditation has been able to help me let thoughts go without getting crazy.  I have a hard time falling asleep because of all the ideas running through my mind, but, after I trained myself some basic meditation techniques, I can tell myself to just rest.

So here is how coloring helped me rest and actually saved me time.  I knew my brain needed a rest in between coaching calls. I knew I was already tired from travelling last week, and if I went from my coaching call, to doing this Facebook Live, straight into my coaching call with my coach, I would be tired, and I would likely be all over the place, which would make the call I had scheduled for 90 minutes be two hours.

Instead, I rested and did some coloring in my coloring book, let my brain rest, and my coaching call actually ended 10 minutes early.  So this actually saved me 40 minutes of time I probably would have spent rambling by resting for 10 minutes.

We know rest is important.  We know that God created the earth in 6 days and rested on the 7th, but I wanted to remind you and give you some practical tips on how you can get more rest throughout your day and inside your business so you can make adjustments on timing.

I hope that was helpful and an encouragement for you today.
